Signs of Our Times
Short Film, 2005

Short independent film written and directed by J.B. Soler in 2005. The film is a documentary study of the different signs, symbols and iconography used during the peace protests of the summer of 2004. The film also compares how the news media covered these events.

Shot in Progressive Scan DV format, the film post-production phase has been completed, and has been submitted to various film festivals around the nation.

The film combines footage shot during many of the 2004 protests, and the signature animations of J.B. Soler, which focus on the iconography and symbology of these social movements in the context of the current political environment.

UPDATE: "Signs of Our Times" has been selected for competition by the Chicago International Reel Film Festival. It will be showing in Chicago the weekend of September 30, 2005.

Lingoland
York Theater, NY 2005

In late 2004 the York Theater and Martian Entertainment commissioned to Julio Soler the production of a series of short films to illustrate parts of their musical "Lingoland," a tribute to poet and lyricist Kenward Elmslie. The musical featured his songs, opera arias, poems, memories, and scenes from plays—as well as projections of art by Joe Brainard, Red Grooms, Larry Rivers, Alex Katz, and others whom Elmslie worked with. In addition to producing the animated segments, Julio was commissioned to develop the full video installation for the show. The installation included the projection of the animations and the selected artwork in synchronicity to the actual theatrical performances of Lingoland.

The animation segments used the songs of Elmslie as theircentral motive. Initially six animations were created by Julio Soler, but later on two of these were discarded for time constrains. In the end, Soler presented four animated short films in DV format that were projected during the theatrical representations of "Lingoland." The four segments are the following:

  1. "Lingoland -Opening", in which the image of Kenward Elmslie appears floating in clouds made of words.
  2. "Brazil", humorous animation that illustrates the song's theme, in which the entire Bush administration shirks responsibility by taking off to Brazil, since there's no extradition treaty with the US.
  3. "Girl-Machine." This segment is a tribute to Busby Berkeley and the musicals of the 1930's. It's based in the poem of the same name that Andy Warhol commissioned to Elmslie.
  4. "Roy Rogers." Images of the Wild West and a bygone era illustrate Elmslie's narrations.
Lingoland opened in New York City for previews on February 7, 2005 at the York Theater, and later to the general public on February 23, 2005.

The Peeper
Short Film, 2000 (remastered in 2003)

Short independent film written and directed by David Carrington in 2000, and co-produced with Julio Soler. Julio also edited the film and produced the 2003 digital remaster.

The film was fully edited in an older Pinnacle Targa 2000 station using Premiere. This system allowed the production of an initial master, but it was very limited and never delivered the type of results that we required for the film. These digital tracks were later remastered and cleaned up on a more advanced Canopus DVStorm2 station, resulting in the final digital remaster of the movie.

The film was produced with the help of the Boston BFVA association and Emerson College in 2000.

After Charlie (2004)

Video installation produced for the projection during live performance of the play "After Charlie," by ETdC Projects theater company.

The multimedia video installation required a very specific timing and synchronization, so that the actors on stage could interact with the characters and animations projected during the live performance. This was aimed to create a dream-like effect where fantasy and reality fused together on stage.

Music Videos (various)

College projects, ASU.

As part of several college assignments, Julio produced and edited several music videos for various bands. Most of these music videos used heavy post-production compositing and special effects.

The production of some of these videos also included the live recording using multi-camera systems in studio.
